Poverty - Chad is one of the poorest countries in Africa.
These children are suffering from malnutrition. The one on the left is extremely bloated from lack of proteins and vitamins, and the one on the right is just about all bones. Poverty is generally caused by poor governance, corruption and conflict, lack of development, lack of education and job opportunities. Lake Chad is also diminishing causing water shortage. There isn't enough water to drink or to water their crops.
Chronic food shortages are widespread, and malnutrition levels among young children are high.
About 40 percent of children up to six years suffer from chronic malnutrition, and 39 per cent are undersized for their age.
In 2000, only 17% had access to safe water.
With poor nutrition and the threat of disease, 20% of children (or 1 in 5) do not live to see their fifth birthday.
